The Best is yet to come...Pure Michigan Salmonid Mecca

Despite the hot and dry summer, our rivers and the Great Lakes have held up remarkably well!
Given the low flows from lack of rain, that has actually allowed more cold water underground spring influences on our smaller rivers and even Muskegon tailwater. Lots of summer rain run-off is usually warm water- thus our vast underground cold spring aquifer Michigan is planted on with its sand/chalk down soil, allows more spring flow influence.
We are very excited of what is yet to come for 2018- an amazing array of trout, salmon and steelhead possibilities unlike nowhere on the planet, and all in one state- #PureMichigan at its finest, and we can bring it all to you!
SUMMER STEELHEAD AND CHROME SILVER COHO SALMON ON ST. JOSEPH RIVER
( Gene Kelly with a beauty two weeks ago)
Despite our first push of fresh fish two weeks ago, we are now waiting for the Lake to turnover from the 74F that it is now and will cool down to the low 50F water beach temps when we get the next wave of Nor'easterly winds. That will bring in the rest of the bulk of summer Skamania and chrome silver coho salmon we should get an excellent run this year ( Indiana plants close to 400,000 coho -wild Michigan Platte River strain) We are waiting for the next wave and bulk of the run to come in for the rest of August and September, since June and July was so hot with lake and river temps soaring back then. It has cooled off considerably. I still have a few dates left for these exciting fish as the best is yet to come!
( The coho of the St. Joe come in chrome silver with a tad of pink- stunning fish on the fly rod!)

OUR DIVERSE TROUT FISHERIES

DRY FLY HEAVEN TIME!!!!....From the Muskegon and Manistee tailwaters , to all the small jewel spring creeks we have all around us, the best fishing for the year is on right now, Fishing early mornings when the flows are the coolest, we have wild browns, and brookies in the small spring creeks, and rainbows and browns in the tailwaters that can get to trophy size. Tricos in the morning, followed by the caddis hatches which are just starting and will peak in the next 8 weeks, along with terrestrial hoppers/beetles and ants The massive midges,  tiny Pseudo Blue -winged Olives and flying ants are an August thru October gig and can litter the water in massive amounts and bring every fish up to the surface.

FALL CHINOOK KINGS AND STEELHEAD
( here are two epic fish from 2017- Gene from Boston with his massive Wild king salmon on Muskegon September 2017- and Norm from Connecticut with his stunning winter run swung up on his Burky spey-December 2017)
All indications are the big lake is loaded with very large Kings and much larger than average steelhead ( they are hitting the alewives and exotic shrimp populations) They will start hitting our rivers from September through December. A few have already been spotted to rivers up north ( Betsie,Manistee, PM)
Judging by the massive size of summer steelhead this year, our fall/winter run steels are packing on the weight and should be game on this fall!
OUR UNIQUE ATLANTIC SALMON FISHERY

Our Michigan Atlantic salmon fishery has been world class and it continues to get better!  My client and I still hold the world IGFA record at 27 pounds taken in 2011. Last year we saw some amazing fish in the mid 20 lb class, especially this Brutus caught by Brett Howard on my electric Green Butt Candy Cane above. The run so far on the St. Mary's is strong and we are looking to crack a new world IGFA record this fall- I have very few dates left so treat yourself to this magnificent "bucket list" fish of a lifetime
Cheers!- na zdrowie, more good things to come !

Private Hatch Matching Sessions- Individual or Partners

Want to learn to catch trophy tailwater and small stream browns and bow's during  hatch periods! What to look for when nothing is hatching or the river seems void of activity? Are your fly offerings constantly rejected? Are you undecided on how to read rise forms and know what stage of feeding the trout are on-nymph, emergers, adults, spinners?. Do you want to learn how to cover river water and read prey interception points on any river or stream for tossing streamers -no matter where you are?Do caddis hatches leave you crippled for answers?

For the last couple years,I've been doing personal schools as people are shying away from group schools, where you are just another body with a rod, and looking for more in-depth personal attention. My guided sessions deal with all the information issues :both stark novice and advanced anglers are looking for. Aside from the above, I teach:
*proper casting profiles/ presentations in situations
* show how to tie lethal patterns
*power-point hatch matching specifics
* put you on trophy fish and all the steps you need to deduce and put together an action plan to catch them consistently- just having a boat and cool gear doesn't make you a consistent and successful trophy trout hunter!

I do one/two or three person class guide sessions-AM or PM, or both together. You get more out of these encounters than you would in a school scenario.
Call or email for more info. I custom make them to your needs and what you want to learn and come away with, and can't just do it from books, You Tube and pod casts !

Steelhead run still going strong...big browns on the hunt...hatches ready to explode

( Chris Hefner from Denver last week with an awesome steelhead- they are running very large this year!)
Our water conditions are ideal and slightly on the high side. Great numbers of steelhead still coimng in the river- the rest of May until Memorial weekend will see steelhead continue to come since we are running a month late due to a bitter cold spring.
Got a 25 inch brown on Thursday and more big brownies are showing up as water temperatures warm up. The Gray Drake/sulpher and caddis hatches are ready to explode- some American March browns on the water just starting.
May and June are going to be epic wiyth the cold spring retaining lots of water in the aquifers on the tailwaters and sproing creeks-still have some great open dates to expierence wo;rd class fly fsihing- especially to teach your childern and young ones the beauty of the sport and outdoors!
cheers-na zdrowie!

Fresh wild king salmon and layering the pools and the finest way to enjoy them.
 - swinging west coast wets classic style- the fight is explosive and the fish are their ultimate sport.
We still have a few good openings and would love to see you this fall...then comes steelhead and Atlantic salmon!

All I can say " It's been a Trutta-truly amazing spring thus far"

( Gorgeous typical over-fed brown on our Michigan 'ground zero',sandy/wooded spring creeks and tailwaters this spring-image by client Aaron Hulswitt)

All I can say is "spectacular" to describe the hatches and brown trout fishing this spring. Lots of fish common in the mid to upper teens- more fish over 20" this year than I've seen in 17 years on the Muskegon tailwater. The hatches have been 'THROUGH THE ROOF!...sulphers galore, March Browns, ridiculous often unfishable numbers of gray drake siphlonurus spinners that cover the water like sawdust- hydro and micro caddis and midge flights to the point that I'm wearing a buff on my face everyday- and the Isonychia really haven't started yet!- A very cool spring and more cool weather in store is going to make June ' amazing again!-( last year  2016 we were already in 90 F STIFLING HEAT AND WATERS HEATING UP!
Cheers!- Matt
( Distinguished east coast author and amazing world class fly caster/instructor - John Field-, who I had the pleasure of guiding for a few days last week, who wrote "Fly Casting Finesse", with a gorgeous Muskegon brownie. This gentleman embodies the essence of a true fly fishing connoisseur/ purist practitioner of all that is good in the "art form" of the sport.  )

( A typical gray drake blizzard a nightly occurrence on the Muskegon- size #10 mayflies thick like swarming black fly midge simulium over Lake Myvatn in Iceland on the Big Laxa)
( with all the naturals on the water, this spring has caused us to take our presentation game 'up a notch", being creative with all the new synthetics and time honored material combos to fool over saturated donkey truttas)
( my infamous 'gang bang' cluster bomb siphlonurus )
( my Json/natural material combo spinner- about as real as it gets!)

TRICO MADNESS HAS BEGUN -THE WHITE CURSE

( male and female trico spinners- a prolific tiny mayfly hatch all summer to fall- image Colin. Monahan )
A massive "super hatch" has started up on the mighty Muskegon. It started back in the late 1990's, but it waxed and waned over the years. But the last few years it has come on strong with yesterdays hatch rivaling Bighorn proportions. Pods of rainbows and browns fed on them in the deep spring fed pools- the dry fly action was epic!
Check out these very cool videos I took yesterday by clicking on link below
Tomorrow- Trico hatch details

YOU ASKED FOR IT!...HERE IT IS....ALSO MAYFLIES HAVE STARTED!

(APM (all purpose mayfly) PHEASANT TAIL)
I have never created a more deadly nymph...PERIOD!!!. It is extremely effective fished classic...down-and- across wet fly swing, with twitching and jigging movements manipulating the articulation. It is deadly on spring creeks sight fished to actively nymphing trout during baetis and sulpher/PMD hatches..A.K.A Frank Sawyer style.
On tailwaters and freestone stream swung actively along with tight circular mends clockwise and counterclockwise to manipulate swim-and-drop movements....GOOD LUCK!, and go heavier on the tippets, and just tighten  line on the strike since fish will hit this nymph very hard!!! The articulated movement, soft hackle pulsing and very realistic look all add up to a triple whammy for the trout!!!

RECIPE- THIS FLY CAN BE USE FROM SIZE 10- THRU 18...TO IMITATE A LARGE ARRAY OF MAYFLIES- MOST DEADLY FOR HENDRICKSONS ,  QUILLS, DRAKES, PARALEPS, SULPHERS/PMD'S, BWO'S, STENONEMAS....

BACK HOOK: DAIICHI 1110 STRAIGHT EYE
THREAD: UNI BROWN 6/0
TAIL: WOOD DUCK OR GADWALL DUCK-HARELINE
BODY: NATURAL PHEASANT TAIL ( USE NUMBER OF STRANDS BASED ON SIZE-FEWER FOR SMALLER SIZES ETC.,, VISA VERSA
RIBBING: COPPER WIRE

(THEN BREAK HOOK GAPE OFF IN VICE BY TWISTING THE SHANK FORWARD AND BACKWARD GENTLY!!!!- NOT TO DISTURB THE MATERIALS ON THE HOOK (NOTE: IN PRODUCTION TYING, I USUALLY TIE A DOZEN OR SO TAILS FIRST

FRONT HOOK: DAIICHI X120....SIZES#10- THRU 18
THREAD:UNI  6/0 BROWN
BEAD HEAD: SMALL COPPER BEAD BASED ON HOOK SIZE
EYES:....HARELINE EX. SMALL/SMALL/LARGE BLACK MONO EYES
TIE IN THESE ITEMS FIRST TO UNDERSTAND SPACE REQUIREMENTS WHEN TYING IN MATERIALS

JOINING BACK SECTION- TAKE 5X MONO AND TIE INTO THREAD AND THRU THE EYE OF BACK HOOK AND KEEP A SMALL LOOSE LOOP SO ARTICULATION HAPPENS- SEAL WITH SUPER GLUE OR LOON FLOW UV LIGHT- LET DRY OR LIGHT TO DRY---CAUTION: DON'T USE HEAVIER MONO/FLOURO BECAUSE IT WILL NOT WIGGLE AND GET STUCK!

FIRST STEP ONCE BACK HOOK IS JOINED: FORM THE OVERLAPPING BACK AND TIE IN  YOUR CHOICE OF :THE PICTURE ABOVE IS A WOOD DUCK FEATHER TIED TIPS FIRST, BUT YOU CAN USE  A STRAND OF THIN SKIN (WAPSI) INSTEAD...THEN TIE IN J;SON SWEDEN (HARELINE) REALISTIC NYMPH LEGS IN SIZES N5/S5 FOR SMALLEST SIZES ...AND WORK UP TO N3 ETC FOR BIGGER MAYFLIES- ( THE LARGER NUMBER IS THE SMALLER LEGS

NEXT: TIE IN A NICE HUNGARIAN SELECT PARTRIDGE SOFT HACKLE FEATHER( HARELINE GRADE 1)

BODY : HARELINE UV ICE DUB PEACOCK

NEXT: PALMER SOFT HACKLE FORWARD TO THE EYES OVER THE ICE DUB- AND PRESS DOWN FIBERS TO THE SIDE OR CLIP TOP FIBERS TO ALLOW FOR BACK

BACK; LUUL LEGS FORWARD FIRST AND THEN WOOD DUCK OR THIN SKIN OVER AND ALIGNED PROPERLY...FOR WOOD DUCK AND LEGS, MOTTLE WITH COPIC BROWN MARKER FOR COLOR/BANDING/SPOTTING

WHIP FINISH AND SEAL BY BEAD WITH LOON/OR CLEAR CURE UV- JUST A DASH AND LIGHT SEAL SO MATERIALS DON'T

RIVER REPORT: MAY STEELHEAD COMING IN!- BIG BROWNS

Our May steelhead are just coming in...a massive 29 inch brown was caught this week by Dan Moser on a streamer...same fish Dr Murphy caught in 2014- CATCH AND RELEASE WORKS!!!

Big browns and rainbows are ready for the dry fly action/hatches to come...gonna be an epic spring!!!!
water levels perfect ..2940CFS

THE MUSKEGON IS PRODUCING BROWNS LIKE THIS!...BUT THE DNR DOESN'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT-SAD!

In case some of you have missed this epic leviathan trutta Dan Moser caught this week on the mighty MO , I can now say with digital/pixel imprint comparison/gill plate comparisons and discussion with Dan,, it is 100% the same fish that my client Dr. John Murphy caught with me back in 2014- within a hundred yards from the exact spot!- further proof that catch -and release works for highly selective , aggressive and educated carnivore browns.

This could be the final "smoking gun proof" we need to convince the DNR and others how the Muskegon could be the next great trophy brown trout fishery in the country ( White/Delaware style). We are forming an alliance of serious and passionate trophy brown trout lovers that will pursue in a 'aggressive/active" ...not "passively/dormant" style , like many organizations seem to operate in due to bureaucracy, lack of energy and laissez faire modus operandi otherwise known as "whatever?" As the country is fed up with Washington establishment and showing so at the polls, a grassroots approach has to start with a few passionate people that has had enough BS from the state officials who has offered the consistent response of "NO"..or " CAN'T BE DONE!".
I have been preaching and pleading with the DNR for over 15 years now to make a progressive move to embrace trophy brown regulations, stock the right strains, make minor adjustments to the regulations that are simple and no brainers with no success and vision on their part- sad, very sad!, despite having conservation organizations(a local one and national one) beating the same drum with no success.
The Muskegon is a massive fertile system with more aquatic invertebrate/vertebrate/fish eggs for food, tremendous spring groundwater influences and water temperatures on the warmer/marginal side needed and ideal to grow large browns and sustain a massive food chain.
If the DNR can only face up to the ' EXISTING FACTS ', that this fish and other fish like it form the proof in the pudding, these fish are real!!!. ( our one biologist refuses to look at picture proof of their existence- that is not science but calculated corruption) and manage the river for such fish, it would be truly epic!..( more to come-stay tuned for a facebook page coming!- everyone who cares for a fishery to develop would be greatly welcomed!.
This is a "call to arms' for brown trout bums to embrace and progressively insist for better management on a fishery that already exists! ). Better brown trout management means better streamer, dry fly and nymphing/spinner /hardware opportunities to exist and a great economic boost to the area which is badly needed..( look at the White River and tourism in winter ). We have more CO officers than ever before to enforce regulations. We have a fishery school that would love to track data...all we need is a sincere move to accept FACT, PROGRESS AND WHAT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO FOR THE RIVER AND FOR ALL QUALITY BROWN TROUT ANGLERS,! (sorry for the long post...che
ers!

Deep winter Selective Michigan Tail water Trout- an Underestimated Passion

( Michigan trout are not just for opening day Hendricksons- scuds/midges/caddis are bread and butter all winter)

I love January on our Muskegon River tailwater- today's afternoon indy nymphing . Our Eagle Lake California strain rainbows are so beautiful and avid scud, midge and caddis larvae eating predators- fat footballs that fight like Big Delaware bows even in 34F water temps. These bows took my 'Super Scud': ‪#‎Hareline‬ UV Ice Dub Shrimp Pink,# Kiley's Scud Skin- a killer in winter with great pulsing movement. Our Michigan rivers are all spring creeks cut from a different mold- highly alkaline even though they have freestone and conifer acidic influences. Scuds are everywhere, extreme high protein intake and 'way' too underutilized and fished...cheers!- great weather for winter nymphing and trout are on the hunt!
( a fat healthy Eagle Lake strain Rainbow from yesterday, January /2016)

(If you are trophy "truttasaurus" hunting with streamer meat, February on the Muskegon and Manistee has seen us catch the largest resident and lake-run post spawn browns that are ferocious and hungry!)
(
( Fat Bastard!...a Muskegon brown that was floating belly up in February, looked dead!!!- was netted by anglers next to me- was choking on a bluegill that spilled over from the reservoir- we removed the gill, performed CPR, and it swam away- it was this close to snuffing it!- the aggressive gluttony browns will subject themselves to is amazing- that's why streamer guys love their gig!)

TACTICS FOR ICE COLD WINTER TAILWATERS
*Much to your surprise, winter trout can be as selectivity driven even when the waters are 34-36F- even though metabolisms are way down. The excellent supply of scuds/midges/caddis larvae/stonefly nymphs and annelids etc., keep them on the constant move and constant hunt.Keep moving until you find fish and dont go back to the 'Proverbial well: hot spots" too often-FISH ARE CONSTANTLY MOVING WITH THE FOOD SUPPLY!
*Concentrate on slower sucker water back eddies/vegetation areas and inside/outside river bends- shallow spots that deliver bio drift and have upwelling currents and spring seeps.
* Indy or Euro nymphing very slowly and scraping the bottom are the key-winter "holes" are not always the deepest spots- they are the periphery/edges
*Though your hands are cold, keep switching tandem patterns as often as possible- have a Mr. Heater with you for the hands and a little bourbon/cognac
(Zago's meat wagon)

* Big Meaty Game Changers, D&D's , Double D's work well but keep them moving slow and crippled- swing/jerk-drift/strip/lift/stumble your streamers-ESPECIALLY WHEN WATER TEMPS ARE IN MIDDLE 30'F- southern tailwaters are much warmer-White/Holsten- let them rip fast and furious due to higher metabolisms and fast moving bait fish
Good Luck- enjoy winter!
*
