ASTONISHING EVENING!........BUG PORN AT ITS FINEST

Honest to God!, in all the 15 years of guiding and 45 years of fly fishing since the age of six, I've seriously never witnessed a mayfly swarm spinner flight like we had on the Muskegon last night........ever! Maybe in 1996 down by Bigalow creek I saw perhaps what would be 1/4th of what we experienced last night from Leto's riffle down to the Gray Drake. It was truely wild. Drakes covering the water like sawdust, mating and dead spinners thick on the bottom of the boat and even my jet engine impeller was getting choked by them.I 've sen heavy hex hatches on Lake Erie and the Soo, but this was crazy!
My client for the evening was Lars Berding, Product manager for Angelreisen.de, one of the largest expedition fishing travel groups in the world from Hamburg, Germany.Lars specializes in their fly fishing sector and fishes Norway,Iceland, the U.K. Finland , Sweden and Russia. When I told him we should have a decent gray drake spinner fall, since it has been so cold for the past three nights, boy I need to be carful for what I wished for! After a brief rain shower at around 6:30, the sun came out and -WHAM- here came the bugs. We sat there in the boat in astonishment watching the specticle mother nature put on. Lars has seen a heavy mayfly hatch and spinner flight on some of the Norweigan rivers, but he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Snapping photos on his digital Cannon, the flight lasted till dark. Within 15 minutes all the rising trout stopped and the river was dead, except for a few dimples of smaller fish.
How was the fishing-terrible! Lars came to catch trout , but instead he witnessed bug porn at its finest. We grilled Mesquite Chicken with red peppars, Mich. asparagus and new potatoes and watched "behing the Gray Drake door". Sometimes its not about the catching or the fishing......sometimes you just watch in awe!
